The Problem

Like all email receivers, FastMail faced an ever-increasing flow of spoofed email and phishing attacks on its network. Not only does the additional traffic take a toll on FastMail’s system performance, but each attack also brings new risk that user accounts could be compromised or malware could be surreptitiously spread across FastMail’s infrastructure.

The Solution

Rather than implementing the infrastructure and operational resources to authenticate incoming email and protect against phishing attacks itself, FastMail turned to the Truedomain Antiphishing NetworkTMservice to do the heavy lifting. Deployment was quick and straightforward, taking less than a week to integrate with the Truedomain milter with all of FastMail’s MTAs.

All incoming email is now authenticated using Truedomain Cloud Authentication, and any phishing attacks targeting domains protected in the Truedomain Network are blocked prior to reaching their intended targets. With the Truedomain solution, FastMail can also visually identify authenticated email with a trust icon in the inbox so its users know those emails are safe before opening them.

As for the integration process, Rob Mueller, FastMail’s CTO says “It has been very easy to deploy. The milter works well, has been perfectly stable and uses negligible extra CPU power.”

The Results

Truedomain started to deliver benefits the moment FastMail went live. As evidenced by the graph below, spoofed and phishing email accounts for roughly 3% on average of the total email volume for the domains being protected, but peaks at almost 15% of total volume during focused phishing attacks.
